One of the (many) joys of having your own server 2004-10-25, 15:30:00:
One of the (many) joys of having my own server for my internet presence is the power it affords. Currently, I am:
- SSH'd into the server,
- actively emailing back and forth through Postfix and Courier,
- compiling new copies of most of the actively-used languages on the server (the GCC compiler, Python, PHP, Perl, the command shells),
- browsing database-backed RSS aggregated newsfeeds via a PHP script on the web server, which are currently being populated by a script while I look at them.
I don't even notice a lag in performance, and the system load is currently about 2.0 (on a single processor system).
This is why I don't know if I can ever go back to not having my own server. Sure, it may be hosted at an ISP somewhere, rather than being a box sitting just to my right, but how could I ever go back?
